Our interview with Ellen Dolgen - aficionado in pre-, during, and post- menopause
It took Ellen Dolgen decades to discover the secrets of her “Shmirshky,” and even longer to dig herself out of “menopausal hell,” as she describes it. A successful businesswoman in LA, mother of two, savvy and smart, she still was “pretty furious” that she wasn’t prepared for perimenopause, that six-to-ten year stretch before menopause actually hits and our period takes its leave.
If you have been so lucky to have received her book in your Konenkii Summer LaunchBox you will have discovered what Ellen did with those feelings. Like the rest of us Konenkii women, she didn’t take it sitting down. In fact, she set out to not only conquer this for herself, but she wrote the book Shmirshky: Think Inside the Box (Don’t have your box yet…sorry-the summer box is sold out but you can subscribe to Konenkii to get the Fall box.)
Her latest, MENOPAUSE MONDAYS: A Girlfriend’s Guide to Surviving and Thriving During Perimenopause and Menopause picks up where the Shmirshky leaves off. With her calling card sense of humor this tale does an amazing job of reviewing all of those annoying and often debilitating symptoms, and delves into the research, the reasons behind those flashes and insomnia and the “desert” her body became. But most of all, she helps to arm all of us with the basics: everyone’s menopause (and its precursor, perimenopause) is unique to them.
“I wish I could tell you,” she says, “that you would receive a ‘hold the date’ notice in the mail so you could mark the exact date in your calendar, but sadly every woman is different.” So finding advocates—from doctors who specialize to the friends and lovers in your life—is critical.
As she puts it, “I didn’t want anyone to suffer needlessly (like I did for four years) because they were not prepared for this time in their life. So, menopause education became my mission. Spurred by my own experience struggling with the symptoms of menopause, I have devoted the last ten years of my life to helping other women during this often difficult time. While I am not a doctor or scientist, I have ‘talked the talk’ with countless menopause experts, so that I can ‘walk the menopause walk’ and share the keys to this menopause kingdom.”
